Birkin 25 vs 30 (and 35): Size, Fit and Price in Japan

Birkin 25 vs 30 (and 35): How to Choose Your Size

The short answer: The Birkin 25 is the compact, dressier choice for a phone, card case and keys; the Birkin 30 holds a full day's essentials, with room for a long wallet and a small pouch together; the 35 is a work or travel bag. If you are petite or mostly carry the bag by hand, start with the 25; if you need room, choose the 30. In our Ginza stock in November 2026, we had about three Birkin 25s for every Birkin 30, and the median listed price of the 25 was slightly higher than the 30.

What is the real difference between a Birkin 25 and a 30?

Five centimetres of width sounds small, but the Birkin grows in every direction at once. The 30 is taller and deeper as well as wider, so it holds noticeably more and looks like a "bag" rather than an accessory. The handles and the flap stay in proportion, so the two sizes look like the same design at different scales.

The practical differences:

  • Capacity. The 25 takes the basics. A long wallet can go into a 25 but leaves little room for anything else; in a 30 it sits easily next to a pouch. If you carry a large phone, a power bank and a pouch every day, try the 30.
  • Opening the bag. The Birkin has a flap, straps and a turn-lock. Many owners leave the flap open. On a 25, the opening is narrow, so reaching in is a little harder.
  • Weight. The 30 is heavier when full simply because you put more into it. Neither size has a shoulder strap, so think about how long you will carry it on your arm.
  • Look. On most people, the 25 reads as small and dressy; the 30 reads as classic and everyday; the 35 reads as a work bag.

Which size suits your height and how you carry it?

There is no rule, but these guides help:

  1. Petite (under about 160 cm). The 25 keeps the proportions balanced. A 30 also works if you need the space; a 35 can look large.
  2. Average height (about 160–170 cm). Both the 25 and the 30 suit. Choose by what you carry, not by height.
  3. Tall (over about 170 cm). The 30 or 35 often looks more natural; the 25 becomes a statement piece.
  4. You carry the bag in the crook of your arm. Try both on in front of a mirror. The handle drop is short on every size, so check the fit over a coat in winter.

If you can, visit the store and hold both sizes. Photos make the 25 look bigger than it is.

How do leather and hardware change the look?

The same size can look quite different depending on the leather and the colour of the hardware.

Leather

  • Togo. A grained calfskin that resists scratches well and is the most common leather on everyday Birkins. On a 25 it holds its shape; on larger sizes it can soften and slouch a little over time. In our stock, 29 of the 31 Birkin 25s were Togo, so "Birkin 25 Togo" is the easiest combination to compare.
  • Epsom. An embossed, lighter leather that keeps a crisp, structured shape and sharp edges.
  • Swift. A smooth leather with a soft shine and rich colour. It shows scratches more easily.
  • Exotics (ostrich, crocodile, alligator). Priced in a different range. Ask for the documents that come with them, and check the rules for bringing exotic leather into your country before you buy.

Hardware

  • Gold hardware looks warmer and dressier, especially with black (Noir), Etoupe and other neutrals.
  • Palladium (silver-tone) hardware looks cooler and more casual, and is easy to wear with any jewellery.
  • Champagne gold sits between the two.

In our Birkin 25 stock, 21 bags had silver-tone hardware, 9 had gold and 1 had champagne gold. The most common colours were Noir (13 bags), Etoupe (7) and Gold, Hermès's tan colour (4).

Which is easier to find pre-owned in Japan: Birkin 25 or 30?

Visitors often ask this, and forum posts mention the 30 more often than the 25. In our own stock on 5 November 2026, the answer was the other way round:

  • Birkin 25: 31 bags listed (29 Togo).
  • Birkin 30: 9 bags listed, plus 2 marked as reserved.
  • Birkin 35 and 40: 1 bag each.

This is one store on one day, not the whole Japanese market, and the numbers change every week. Still, it suggests that if you want a 25 in a classic colour such as black or Etoupe, you are likely to have several to compare in Ginza; if you want a specific 30, it is worth messaging us before your trip.

Is a Birkin 25 cheaper than a 30?

Not necessarily. In our stock, the median listed price of the Birkin 25 (¥3,763,637) was higher than that of the Birkin 30 (¥3,527,273), excluding tax. Leaving out exotic leathers, the 25s ranged from ¥2,163,637 to ¥4,227,273 and the 30s from ¥2,709,091 to ¥3,690,910. The price of a pre-owned Birkin depends more on demand for the size, colour, leather, hardware, year (shown by the stamp) and condition than on its size alone.

For the same reason, avoid comparing a pre-owned price with a boutique price you have seen online. Boutique prices change by country and over time, so check the current price where you live.

It holds a phone, card case or compact wallet, keys and a lipstick. If you carry a long wallet or a pouch every day, the 30 is usually more comfortable.

Birkin 30 or 35 for work?

The 30 suits most days; the 35 fits an A4 folder or a tablet. Try both with what you actually carry.

How much is a Birkin 25 in Japan?

In LUXARIA's stock on 5 November 2026, Birkin 25s in calf leather were listed from ¥2,163,637 to ¥4,227,273, excluding tax. This is a guide; prices change with stock.

Which leather is easiest to find in a Birkin 25?

In our stock, Togo: 29 of 31 Birkin 25s. Togo is grained, resists scratches well and is easy to live with.

Gold or palladium hardware?

Gold looks warmer and dressier; palladium (silver-tone) looks cooler and goes with any jewellery. In our Birkin 25 stock, silver-tone was more common.

Can I reserve a Birkin before my trip?

We generally do not hold items. Please message us with the item number and we will do our best to help.
