Is Hermès Cheaper in Japan? Pre-Owned Birkin Prices (2026)

Hermès Birkin 25 Beton

Is Hermès Cheaper in Japan? How Pre-Owned Birkin and Kelly Prices Work (2026)

The short answer: Sometimes, but not always. Pre-owned Hermès prices in Japan depend on the model, size, leather, colour, hardware, year stamp, condition, accessories and the exchange rate on the day you pay. To know whether Japan is cheaper for you, compare the same bag in the same condition, with tax and shipping included. As a guide, pre-owned Birkin 25s in LUXARIA's Ginza stock were listed at ¥2,163,637–¥6,361,819 excluding tax in November 2026.

Why "Is Hermès cheaper in Japan?" has no single answer

Japan has a large, well-established resale market for luxury goods, and Tokyo stores often hold many Birkins, Kellys and Constances at once. More choice makes it easier to find the exact bag you want, and to compare prices side by side. But a pre-owned price is set by supply and demand for that exact bag, not by a price list. The same model can differ by millions of yen depending on its details.

So the useful question is not "Is Japan cheaper?" but "Is this bag, at this price, a fair deal compared with the same bag elsewhere?"

What sets the price of a pre-owned Hermès bag

1. Model and size

The model matters most. In our stock, a Picotin Lock PM and a Birkin 25 are priced in very different ranges (see the table below). Size also matters, but bigger is not always more expensive: in November 2026, our lowest-priced Birkin was a size 35, and the Birkin 25 was the size we held most often (31 of 44 Birkins).

2. Leather

Everyday leathers such as Togo, Epsom, Swift and Clemence sit in one range. Exotic leathers such as ostrich or alligator sit in a much higher range. In our stock, a Birkin 25 in Togo was listed from ¥2,981,819, while a Birkin 30 in alligator was ¥10,890,910 (excluding tax).

3. Colour and hardware

Neutral colours such as Noir (black), Etoupe and Gold are widely asked for. Hardware is usually gold, palladium (silver colour) or champagne gold. Two bags of the same model, size and leather can still be priced differently because of colour and hardware.

4. The stamp (year mark)

Every Hermès bag carries a letter stamp that shows the year it was made (for example "B" for 2023 and "W" for 2024). The stamp should be written on the tag or listing. When you compare prices, compare bags from a similar year.

5. Condition

Condition grades are one of the biggest reasons two "identical" bags have different prices. On our site we use these grades: New, Unused item, Used super beautiful condition, Used condition, Used Good Product, and Sign of use. Look at the corners, handles, interior and hardware, and ask the store to point out any wear.

6. Accessories

Check what comes with the bag: dust bag, box, raincoat, clochette, lock and keys. A bag with its full set of accessories is usually easier to resell. Ask for the list, because "full set" can mean different things at different stores.

7. Exchange rate and payment

Japanese stores price in yen. If your home currency is strong against the yen, the same yen price costs you less. Card companies apply their own exchange rate, so check the rate your card will use.

How to compare prices fairly

  1. Match the bag exactly. Same model, size, leather, colour, hardware, stamp year and condition grade. Change one of these, and you are comparing two different bags.
  2. Match the accessories. A bag with box and dust bag is not the same as a bag alone.
  3. Convert on the same day. Use the exchange rate on the day you plan to pay.
  4. Add every cost. Include Japanese consumption tax if it applies, any tax refund you can get, shipping, and any import duty or tax in your country.
  5. Check your home market yourself. Boutique and resale prices in your country change by time and place, so check them close to your trip rather than relying on old figures.

Tax: in store versus online

How tax works depends on how you buy.

Buying in store (from 1 November 2026)

Japan's tax-free shopping for visitors changed to a refund system on 1 November 2026:

  • You pay the price including 10% consumption tax at the store and show your passport.
  • When you leave Japan within 90 days of purchase, customs confirms the items before you check in your luggage. Keep the bag with you so you can show it.
  • After customs confirms the items, the consumption tax is refunded.
  • For items of ¥1,000,000 or more (excluding tax), the store records details such as the serial number.
  • If you do not take the items out of Japan after the customs check, the tax is collected.

At LUXARIA, eligible items are tax-free, and the procedure is done at our tax-free counter. Bring your passport.

Buying online for delivery abroad

On global.luxaria.jp, prices for overseas delivery are shown as export prices, without Japanese consumption tax. Shipping to most countries costs extra and is shown at checkout. Import duty and tax in your country are paid by the recipient. Check your country's rules before you order.

Notes:

Is it worth buying Hermès in Japan?

It can be, if:

  • You want a specific size, colour or leather and can compare several in one visit.
  • You can inspect the bag in person and see the stamp, condition and accessories.
  • The total cost, after tax refund, shipping and import duty, is lower than or close to what you would pay at home, and you value the choice.

It may not be, if the bag you want is easy to find at home at a similar total cost, or if import duty in your country takes away the difference.

FAQ

Is Hermès cheaper in Japan than in my country?

It depends on the bag, the exchange rate and your country's import duty. Compare the same model, size, leather, stamp year and condition, with tax and shipping included.

How much is a pre-owned Birkin 25 in Japan?

At LUXARIA in November 2026, Birkin 25s were listed at ¥2,163,637–¥6,361,819 excluding tax, and Togo leather ones at ¥2,981,819–¥4,227,273. This is a guide only, as stock changes daily.

Is a pre-owned Birkin more expensive than the boutique price?

It can be higher or lower. Pre-owned prices follow resale demand for each model and colour, not the boutique price list. Check the current boutique price in your country yourself, as it changes by country and time.

Do I pay Japanese tax if I buy online from abroad?

Prices for overseas delivery on global.luxaria.jp are export prices without Japanese consumption tax. Import duty and tax in your country are paid by the recipient.

How does tax-free shopping work in Japan from November 2026?

You pay the price including tax in store and show your passport. Within 90 days, customs confirms the items when you leave Japan, before you check in your luggage, and the tax is then refunded.

Why do two Birkin 25s have different prices?

Leather, colour, hardware, year stamp, condition and accessories all change the price, even when the model and size are the same.
